Zip line tours are all the rage and now Illinois has its first entirely tree-based zip line canopy tour nestled right here in southern Illinois surrounded by the beauty and majesty of the Shawnee National Forest.
Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour is situated on 82 acres of woodlands near Marion, Ill. and is set to open April 18. Eight separate zip lines crisscross the trees with the longest line stretching an amazing 1,100 feet. The lines will carry riders from bluff to bluff and dip into the valley between.
There are 11 platforms and three aerial suspension bridges – the longest of which spans 180 feet. Two short ground hikes will get you to your destinations.
Trained guides will escort groups of eight guests on the tours, teaching history, geology and ecology of the area before assisting zip line riders. Speeds in excess of 35 mph can be experienced as riders glide safely above tree tops.
The entire experience lasts about three hours and will be available for $85 per person. The company is offering a 10% discount for groups of eight or more. Individual gests must weigh at least 70 pounds in order to participate.
Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour is located in Makanda and is accessible from Interstate 57. Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and Giant City State Park are other attractions located nearby. The site also offers a welcome center, gift shop and concessions.
