There are two events of interest to costumers this coming weekend. Both are in the East Bay. The first one is a vintage fashion faire and the other is the Gaskell Halloween Ball.
Alameda Point Vintage Fashion Faire
The producers of the Alameda Point Antiques Faire are holding a vintage Halloween fashion faire on Oct. 18 and 19 at the Rock Wall Wine Company in Alameda, Calif. There will be 50 booths of vintage fashion showcasing a wide variety of women’s and men’s clothing, couture, jewelry, accessories, hats, textiles and more. Fashion from different eras will be represented including the late 19th century as well as 20th century decades (1920s through 1980s). Styles included are Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, Mod, Disco and Steampunk.
Friday is the shopping preview and early buy night when the faire will be open from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. There will be a Halloween-themed costume contest at 8:00 p.m. on Friday with prizes for all entries. The grand prize is a $100 voucher good for any booth at the faire. Saturday also has an early buy opportunity from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. with general admission starting at 11:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. For more information and to buy tickets, go to: http://alamedapointantiquesfaire.com/blog/vintage-fashion.
Gaskell Halloween Ball
The Gaskell Ball is the Bay Area’s oldest formal ball where you can experience vintage dancing to live music with elegant costumes in a beautiful 1920s ballroom. On Oct. 19, the Gaskell organizers will be holding their annual Halloween ball at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center. While standard formal attire is acceptable, costumes are highly encouraged. Guests can wear historical, scifi, fantasy, Steampunk, anime or comic book costumes.
Bear in mind that the goal is to dance in the costumes. So make sure you can move and turn without tripping. Also, costumes that may be a hazard to other attendees will not be allowed. That means no sharp, pointy parts that might damage other dancers.
The will be a 2 1/2-hour dance class at 3:30 p.m., the doors open for the ball at 7:30 p.m. with a half-hour dance class at 7:45 p.m. Dancing to live music begins at 8:30 p.m. and ends at midnight. For more information, go to: http://www.gaskellball.com/index.htm.
