After “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” scored the second-biggest opening for an Easter weekend release, Paramount is moving forward with plans for a third “G.I. Joe” film. According to a March 31 report from Variety, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” opened with $132 million worldwide. After the numbers came in, sources confirmed that the third film will be made.
No other details have been given about the third film, aside from the assumption that it will be in 3D. However, during a recent press junket, Collider.com reported that producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura would like to include more ninja mythology in the third film.
“I’d like to do more ninja story,” Bonaventura said. “That’s really fun, and I think the mythology will support some really cool things.”
A “huge fan” of the television show, “Combat!,” Bonaventura also said that he would like for the third one to have more of an “intimate level,” using the second film’s “home scenes” between Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson as an example.
“They’re not buddy scenes, but they translated that way somehow,” Bonaventura said. “So they’re basic character scenes, and they’re domesticated scenes. How well that played in the scale of what we’re trying to do. I’d like to see more of that.”
“G.I. Joe: Retaliation” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
