“Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird! It’s a plane! No! It’s Free Comic Book Day! That’s right kids, Free Comic Book Day has returned to Stamford Conn’s premier comicbook shop, A Timeless Journey (2538 Summer Street, Stamford) on Saturday May 4th, when comicbook shops all across the country will be celebrating the 12th annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD). For the past 12 years the first Saturday in May has become an industry-wide celebration of one of the true American forms of art, the comicbook.
FCBD was started back in 2002 by Diamond Distributing (the major distribution venue of comics in the U.S.) to celebrate this uniquely American form of entertainment, over the years the event has spread out from the U.S. going worldwide. Here in Stamford, Free Comic Book Day will once again be celebrated to the fullest by Paul Salerno, owner of A Timeless Journey. As in years past Paul is fully prepared for a terrific celebration. “I’ve always felt that the real beauty of Free Comic Book Day is that it allows readers to sample comicbooks that they might not have previously had the opportunity to pick up before.” Needless to say, Paul likes to make a big deal about the event.
This year, with some 52 comics from essentially all of the major comicbook companies and quite a few of the mid-sized and Indie publishers available makes this one of the biggest celebrations yet. Sorry, kids, not ALL comics in Paul’s shop are free. Comics that are issued on Free Comic Book Day are specially prepared for the event, usually they are either special promo comics promoting what fans can expect to see coming from an individual publisher over the coming year, reprints of previously-issued comics that proved to be very popular, or comics that contain special stand-alone stories promoting a specific event. While not all stores carry all of the free comics, Paul has indicated that he will be carrying quite a few.
This year, the comic book companies that are providing comicbooks include: Bongo (the Simpsons), Dark Horse (Star Wars), Marvel (a pair of Avenger tie-ins, one featuring Thanos, and the other featuring the Hulk), VIZ (It’s An Ugly Doll), Kaboom, Ape Entertainment, United Plankton Pictures (Spongebob Squarepants), DC (one featuring Superman and another with Batman and the Teen Titans), Papercutz (Smurfs), Idea & Design Works (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Image (The Walking Dead), Archie, Dynamite Entertainment (Damsels), Valiant (Harbinger Wars) and many, many more. Needless to say, in addition to all of the free comics that A timeless Journey has stockpiled, Paul’s store is full of tons of loads comics and comic-related merchandise, including trading cards, toys, models, and so much more!
While most people today are probably more familiar with the comicbook superheroes that populate our movies and videogames, comicbooks themselves date back to the early days of the 20th Century and came about as an outgrowth of syndicated newspaper funnies. Today, they still are published by numerous publishers and showcase a wide variety of diverse storylines capturing the imagination of readers the world over. Comics have survived the rise of radio, the ubiquity of TV, the spread of color and sound movies, the dominance of videogames, and the immediacy of the Internet., and according to one writer actually form the nucleus of the Pop Culture engine.
