The big box clubs are all 40 miles west in neighboring Reno – Planet Fitness, Fitness Connection, Fitness for 10, Sports West Athletic Club, Gold’s Gym, and a few others. That’s just fine with Shelby Hill, General Manager at Anytime Fitness in Fernley (pop. 19,368), NV.
A popular franchise – ranked #6 in Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list – Anytime has taken a major foothold in suburbs and smaller communities across the country but, perhaps, nowhere as much – or as well – as in Nevada. Anytime Fitness in Fernley opened just four years ago – in February 2008 – followed by Yerington (pop. 3048) in June 2009, Gardnerville (pop. 5656) in January 2011, and Fallon (pop. 8600) is on the table to open in September 2013.
“Our goal is to have 10 Anytime Fitness Centers by 2018 throughout rural Nevada and Arizona,” says Hill, who also serves as Area Director for franchise owners – and brothers – Greg and Bonz Kundra.
The Fernley location in the Chisholm Shopping Center at 1201 Penny Lane, is 4,250 square feet in size and tightly – but efficiently – organized with wall-to-wall equipment including cardio, free weights, selectorized strength training equipment, functional training, and tanning. It isn’t big but, then, Anytimes aren’t designed to be big – just practical – and their convenient 24/7 access has made them the largest chain of fitness centers in the world with more than 2,000 locations.
“From a gym perspective the facilities are easier to run than the big box clubs” explains Hill, “and are much more focused on the personal relationship with the members. From a membership perspective, the benefit of being open 24 hours plus members having access nationwide is a great benefit.”
Hill, 33, grew up in Idaho and Washington and graduated from Hanford High School, in Richland (pop. 49,890) WA, where she was active in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She also played basketball in college while earning her undergraduate degree in marketing and business management (double major) from Boise State University with a minor in finance and an MBA from Northcentral University in Sports Medicine and Leadership.
Shelby is certified by the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) as a personal trainer (CPT). She is also certified in Senior Fitness & Sports Nutrition, by APEX, the American Council on Exercise (ACE), and by the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA) in Lifestyle Management, Sports Yoga, and Pilates. She has worked in the fitness industry for more than decade – the last six with Anytime – in various management positions.
“Anytime Fitness allows for flexibility, within reason, to customize clubs to the market,” explains Shelby. “An example would be the 1200 sf expansion we completed in February 2013 in our Gardnerville Club. We added a functional training area with half racks, boxing equipment, ropes, tires, Astroturf and more, in addition to the current group classroom. Our forthcoming Fallon facility will have a functional training area that will include Synergy 360 components from Life Fitness, a bit different than the functional space in Gardnerville but more suited for the market.”
“Anytime Fitness Corporate requires all franchises to do a reinvention every 5 years which is great for members knowing they will have updated clubs and equipment. We’re fortunate to have all of our clubs in smaller markets with a mission to bring better health to everyone in the community because if you don’t make time for health and wellness you will have to make time for injury and illness.”
Anytime Fitness in Fernley – a model of excellence open ANYTIME, all the time.
