For most people, even endurance athletes, no fitness event is more physically challenging or mentally grueling than a triathlon. Yet despite the intense training and endurance required to complete the multi-stage event, more celebrities than ever are competing in triathlons.
Pop star Jennifer Lopez is one of them. In 2008, Lopez completed the Nautica Malibu mini-triathlon (which involves a half-mile swim, 18-mile bike ride and four-mile run) in a respectable two hours and 23 minutes.
Lopez, then 39, trained for the mini-triathlon as a way to lose the excess baby weight she was carrying after giving birth to twins seven months earlier. Jennifer slimmed down during training and looked amazing during the competition. “I feel great,” she gushed. “I have more energy, and I’m proud of myself.”
While weight loss wasn’t her goal, actress Teri Hatcher competed in the Malibu mini-triathlon the following year as a way to celebrate her 45th birthday. Hatcher finished the event with an impressive time of two hours and 11 minutes.
More recently, Matthew McConaughey and Jon Cryer have also competed in triathlons, but the list of celebrity triathletes isn’t limited just to actors. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, TV chef Rocco DiSpirito and /CNN journalist/neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta are among the stars who have finished triathlons.
When asked why he trains so hard every day, Matthew McConaughey simply said he enjoys looking and feeling his very best — physically and mentally.
“It’s always been a lifestyle,” McConaughey, 43, told Men’s Fitness. “Then it became something that was like, ‘Hey, it’s also good for my job.’ I’m not a professional athlete, but I have a job where I like to look good and be as healthy as possible.”
