The “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie fandom was thrown into an excited uproar this week with Stephen Amell of “Arrow” and his casual announcement that he’d had a meeting about casting — likely for the lead role of Christian Grey. Yet as Cosmopolitan reported this Friday, March 22, that while the time of the “Fifty Shades” film adaptation is still some time away, there is no confirmation that Amell has been cast as Christian Grey, nor that other actors haven’t had potential meetings as well.
With nearly an entire year since Focus Features and Universal Pictures acquired the rights to E.L. James bestselling erotic romance novel to make a “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie, progress in the film has seemed understandably and painstakingly slow for fellow fans of the raunchy series. And although “Arrow” actor Stephen Amell recently revealed that he’d had a meeting about the potential Christian Grey casting, he added the film is still far in the not-too-distant future.
“I get questions about Christian Grey all the time. That project is a long way off. I know this, because I had a meeting about it. Long way off. I mean, not that long, but not close. I wouldn’t call it long, but I wouldn’t call it close,” said the handsome actor.
Yet not all is bad news — in fact, the announcement makes sense. Even without a director yet on board, it’s very likely that the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie team still has their eyes on some potential Christian Grey’s — and likely an Anastasia Steele or two at this point — and may be making some preliminary moves to determine who’s a possible casting candidate. And that is definitely some good news, as it marks the first “confirmed” remark on the film team actually working toward finding our illustrious Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele on the silver screen.
However, it’s important to note that while Stephen Amell is certainly at least being looked at by producers, that doesn’t mean that any other fan favorite Christian Grey actors aren’t being considered at the moment, either. It’s probable that more initial casting meetings are in store for potential stars that EL James and the “Fifty Shades of Grey” team may be considering, from Alexander Skarsgard and Henry Cavill to Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer.
And, of course, more casting meetings for the role of Christian or even Ana may have already taken place (a top ten list for who may be great leads for Christian and Ana can be found here), and some actors might simply have stayed quieter than Stephen Amell on the matter. With confirmation that casting is (thankfully) at least on the minds of the team in terms of meeting — the film was stated by a Universal exec to be a “top priority” for the studio and slated for a potential even summer 2014 release — it may be time for fans of the inner goddess’ series to get vocal about their own casting choices once again, even if that actor is a dark-horse contender.
Do you think a no doubt satisfied Stephen Amell is indeed the top Christian Grey candidate at the moment, fellow “Fifty Shades of Grey” fans, or just one of many Red Room of Pain lovers EL James has her eye on?
