Most Clevelanders consider the dandelion a pesky nuisance especially when it is growing all over their lawns but Breitenbach Winery’s annual Dandelion Festival on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 will celebrate the dandelion and its many unexpected uses.
Dandelion Festival Located in Dover, Ohio in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country, Breitenbach Winery is playing host to this annual festival, a free family-friendly event with fun activities that the entire family can enjoy. It is approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Cleveland to Dover.
Activities for children (Saturday only) include a dandelion picking contest and making their own dandelion jelly.
Adults will be able to indulge in some dandelion wine sampling and can take cellar tours. Dandelion wine is one of Breitenbach Winery’s most popular wines and they have been known to have a 2000 gallon supply of dandelion wine on hand.
Guests will be able to sample such delicacies as dandelion lasagna, dandelion sausage, dandelion bread, dandelion gravy, dandelion sangria and even dandelion ice cream.
The 20th annual Great Dandelion Cookoff will take place on Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. with participants creating unique dandelion dishes and competing for cash awards. Sampling of the dishes will be available. You can also order The Great Dandelion Cookbook for $8 plus tax and shipping.
The festivities will also include a juried dandelion arts & crafts show featuring handmade soap (Yes, there will be dandelion soap), candles, handcrafted jewelry, watercolor paintings and books about dandelions.
And don’t miss the cooking demonstrations where you will learn about the healthful benefits of dandelions. All food at the demonstrations will be available for sampling.
Runners will compete for cash prizes at the annual Dandelion May Run on a 3.5 mile course through Amish country on Saturday, May 4 starting at 7:30 a.m.
Guests will be able to enjoy live entertainment (musical groups, a folk singer and cloggers) both days of the Festival.
Hours for the Dandelion Festival are noon – 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3 and 9 a.m. – 8 p.m on Saturday,May 4.
The award-winning Breitenbach Winery produces over 40 varieties of wine and is known for its fresh fruit and berry wines and, of course, dandelion wine. Breitenbach also sells specialty foods like preserves, gourmet mustards, salad dressings and sauces.
