Friday night, March 29, was a good night to be downtown at The Social as Orlando bands Empire Theory, Sovereign Soldiers and Fell On Deaf Ears rocked an enthusiastic mass of music fans. There is always one good indicator of the level of talent to be found on stage at a show and that is the amount of talent off stage, and there were representatives of many local Orlando bands mixed in with the crowd of music fans at this show.
First up was local Orlando rock band Empire Theory. This was the first time playing The Social for this five piece band, Sebastian Zaldibar (lead vocals, guitar), Abel Aponte (bass), Jeremy Haynes (keys), David Oakley (guitar, violin) and Matt Sparks (drums). They kicked their set off with a long extended jam intro for their song “Colors,” the title track of their latest EP. Much to the delight of the fans, there were several more musical jams throughout their set. Some of which had an edgy tone while others had a psychedelic vibe, each one radiating energy throughout the venue and the fans who were feeding it right back to the band.
Just in time for the next band, Sovereign Soldiers, the venue was suddenly eyeball deep in excited teenage girls all crowded around the stage. The four piece Orlando based rock band kicked off their set with the title track to their recently released EP, “Born Again.” The band’s high-energy, guitar driven rock music is chock full of huge hooks and catchy choruses, encouraging audience sing-alongs.
Closing out the night was Orlando band Fell On Deaf Ears. The four piece band, Josh Lyons (vocals), Michael Rizzo (guitar), Bobby Lane (bass, backing vocals) and Jay DiBella (percussion, backing vocals), delivered a steady blast of power rock music from their debut CD “Are You Getting Enough.” For one song, the band brought out a couple of scantily clad dancing girls to liven up the stage. Lyons was not feeling well, but he was still all over the stage, up and down and even jumping down into the pit area during the final song of the band’s spirited performance.
While each band shares the same generic music label, rock, their songs and high-energy live stage performances screamed with unique style and musical spice, enriching the night for the fans in attendance.
