While the fun-filled St. Patrick’s Day holiday is celebrated in March, there is also a special day in April that features fabulous food, colorful parades, great music, fine wine and spirits. It’s Dyngus Day, an annual “holiday” celebrated in Poland and in Polish-American communities throughout America. This year’s event takes place on April 1, 2013, which happens to fall on April Fools’ Day as well. No foolin’!
Dyngus Day celebrates the end of lent and is observed on the Monday after Easter. Celebrated for centuries, modern-day Dyngus Day celebrates Polish-American culture and traditions.
Water and pussywillow switches are staples of the event. Also known as Wet Monday, males sprinkle (or soak) their female counterparts with water and tap them with pussywillows according to tradition. But women return the favor by throwing water or dishes the next day.
Anderson Cooper the Party Pooper?
When CNN’s Anderson Cooper featured Dyngus Day on his RidicuList segment last year, his on-air giggle-fest reaction went viral. He was so amused; he had to walk off the Anderson Cooper 360 show to regain his composure!
Cooper was asked to be the first official Dyngus Day Pussy Willow Prince at the Dyngus Day Buffalo 2013 event and initially accepted.
“I would love to be that first Pussy Willow Prince. Let’s talk again next year.”
But due to a “scheduling conflict,” he no longer can attend. The Party Pooper Cooper website chronicles Mr. 360’s 180-degree-turn. Here’s hoping the silver-fox journalist will be able to attend after all!
