Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary Crawley will begin Season Four of the Masterpiece Theater series mourning the loss of husband Matthew Crawley and raising their Baby George, according to Downtonline. Matthew Crawley was driving home in a euphoric mood after seeing his baby in the hospital with Lady Mary when death approached him in the form of a truck from the opposite direction to end Season Three.
Lady Mary Crawley, played by actress Michelle Dockery, will reportedly be the focus of Season Four as she will have to choose between a bevy of new suitors anxious for the hand of the pretty widow as she continues her mourning.
Among the candidates mentioned to seek her hand is the young widower Tom Branson. Branson was married to younger sister Lady Sybil who died because of complications during childbirth.
Dramatic logic would say that the young widower and widow would become romantically involved. Some fans have even sent e-mails either recommending it or speculating on its possiblility. Will writer/director Julian Fellowes follow that pathway?
Not if Michelle Dockery has anything to say about it.
“O-o-o-h! I can’t do that,” Dockery told TV Guide. “He’s my brother-in-law!”
Allen Leech, who plays Branson, also wants no part of a romantic relationsip with Lady Mary.
“While it would be great drama, I don’t think it would be right for those two,” Leech told TV Guide. “As much as they respect each other they come from very different worlds.”
Downton Abbey fans know that’s an understatement! When fans first saw Branson he was the family chauffeur at Downton Abbey and not considered marriage material by the conservative Lord Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville, or any of his fellow aristocratic family members.
But it’s not Dockery or Leech who will decide the plot for Season Four. That’s up to Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes who has added two more male actors who may court Lady Mary.
Both Tom Cullen and Julian Overden will appear as new characters who could compete for Lady Mary’s favor. Cullen will play Lord Gillingham, a friend of the Crawley family, and was at one time mentioned as a suitor for Lady Mary during her season of grief. However, since then Overden has been hired to play the role of aristocrat Charles Blake.
Is he a challenger for Lady Mary’s hand?
Fans will be happy to realize this is a big year for actress Michelle Lockery. Besides being the focus of the plot in Season Four of Downton Abbey, she has a movie coming out called Non-Stop due for release in 2013. The movie is described as a high action thriller.
She previously appeared in the movie Anna Karenina, based on the Tolstoy novel.
Michelle has starred in numerous London theater productions prior to becoming an international celebrity on both sides of the Atlantic as a result of her role in Downton Abbey. She has also been nominated for the Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards for her work.
Dan Stevens is no longer playing her husband Matthew Crawley because he is shooting a film about Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
