Brenda Novak is an active mother of five whose youngest son, Thad, was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes at the age of five. There began her personal crusade to fight a disease that affects millions.
As a bestselling author, Brenda is bringing attention and fundraising dollars to diabetes research. Brenda’s latest novels are When Summer Comes and When Lightning Strikes. For the past several years she has hosted an online auction from May 1- May 31st, helping to raise $1.6 million so far!
The latest statistics on diabetes are alarming — and clearly establish a challenge Brenda is trying to meet: improve lives by helping to raise money to battle this devastating disease. There are currently 25.8 million children and adults in the United States — thus 8.3% of the population have diabetes. Another 79 million people have pre-diabetes. In 2010, 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed.
Last year’s Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research set a new record! Thanks to the generosity of many people, over $319,000 was raised, which went to the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami, a facility that is singularly devoted to finding a cure.
This year’s auction includes over 2000 fantastic items from trips and stays to autographed books to jewelry and children’s items. Dozens of organizations, families, and individuals have donated goods and services for the worthwhile cause of finding a cure for diabetes. All proceeds from this year’s auction will go to The Diabetes Research Institute (http://www.diabetesresearch.org). According to Brenda, “I’m thrilled with them because they’ll be taking their new Biohub into human trials by the end of the year–and I believe this is our best chance at a cure.”
