“Dancing with the Stars” 2013 resumed March 25 with a second week of performances from the all-new celebrity cast. “American Idol” alum Kellie Pickler and pro partner Derek Hough closed out a night of respectable jives, quicksteps and jazz routines with a performance that earned raves from the judges as well as a share of the coveted top spot on the weekly leader board.
Before Pickler and Hough hit the “DWTS” ballroom to perform their contemporary jazz number, the talented three-time pro champ, who most recently finished the All-Star season in second place with Olympian Shawn Johnson, called their number a risky one. He opined that the judges would either “love it” or fail to understand it.
Fortunately for the duo, their “Lights” dance was a piece of art. The two successfully fused Pickler’s cheerleading experience and incredible flexibility with Hough’s creative expertise and delivered the best performance of the night.
Carrie Ann Inaba gave them a standing ovation, and gushed over Pickler’s lines, artistry and extensions. Len Goodman quipped “last week was a spark, this week is a fire,” and proclaimed it a job well done. Bruno Tonioli called it “modern jazz at its most effective” and “a great achievement on week two.”
A handful of celebrities joined the judges in praising the duo’s effort. Former “DWTS” host Samantha Harris tweeted “Um, holy moly @derekhough @kelliepickler! You guys killed it 2nite on @ABCdancing #DWTS! Derek, ur choreography was amazing!”
Actress Constance Marie shared a similar sentiment shortly after the show’s conclusion, gushing “Was @kelliepickler a dancer? Those legs?! The arches in her feet! That was incredible! Was she cheerleader like yesterday?! DWTS.”
The judges awarded Pickler and Hough 26 points for their jazz number, tying them with Disney actress Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy for the top spot on the weekly leader board. They enter the March 26 elimination with a second-place two-week total of 47 out of a possible 60 points.
