There are three different costume events in the SF Bay Area this coming weekend that costumers can choose to attend. There is a Steampunk convention, a Victorian ball and an Art Deco ball.
Nova Albion Steampunk Exhbition
The Nova Albion Steampunk Exhibition is back for another three-day convention at the Santa Clara Hyatt Regency from April 26-28. Any type of Steampunk costume is welcome, but the specific theme this year is “Steampunks in Space.” The theme gives costumers the opportunity to be more imaginative and create something different from the usual Victorian retrofuturistic style that commonly identifies the genre. There will also be a costume contest at the Victorian ball on Friday night. Go to the Nova Albion website for the complete schedule and ticket information.
Gaskell Spring Ball
The Gaskell Occasional Dance Society’s Spring Ball will be held on Saturday, April 27, at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center. The ball features vintage dancing to live music with elegant costumes. The standard of dress is semi-formal, with gentlemen requiring a minimum of jacket and tie and ladies appropriately dressed. Many attendees come in period costumes from the 19th and 20th centuries. A half-hour class starting at 7:45 p.m. is included in the admission to the ball, which starts at 8:30 p.m. and ends at midnight. Admission is $20.
Art Deco Preservation Ball
This year’s Art Deco Preservation Ball will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the restoration of the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The Paramount Theatre is one of the greatest landmarks of the Art Deco era and is the perfect setting for this ball. Attire for the evening needs to be white tie, black tie or formal attire of the 1920s through the 1940s. The event starts with a reception at 7:00 p.m. with dancing and entertainment from 8:00 p.m. until midnight. Ticket information can be found at the Art Deco Society’s website.
