A group of 33 major American companies issued a Climate Declaration yesterday, urging federal authorities to take action on climate change. Stating that climate change presents “one of America’s greatest economic opportunities of the 21st Century,” the group hopes to draw support from other businesses and individuals.
The signatories included companies such as Unilever, Nike, Adidas, Timberland, KB Home, and Nestle, which has a major manufacturing presence here in Bakersfield. Together they provide almost half a million jobs and annual revenues of approximately $450 billion. Some of them have been adversely affected by extreme weather events like Hurricane Sandy which they feel have exposed the United States’ economic vulnerability to climate change.
“The signers of the Climate Declaration have a clear message for Washington: Act on climate change. We are, and it’s good for our businesses,” said Anne Kelly, Director of Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy (BICEP). “The cost of inaction is too high. Policymakers should see climate change policy for what it is: an economic opportunity.”
The signatories are calling for Congress to promote clean energy, boosting efficiency, and limiting carbon emissions – strategies that these businesses already employ within their own operations.
“Businesses understand that planning for a successful future takes investment today. One of the most important things Congress can do to grow our economy and protect our planet is to pass smart climate change legislation this year. Our workforce, supply chain and consumers are counting on us to lead the way,” said Anna Walker, Director, Government Affairs and Public Policy at Levi Strauss & Co.
The declaration is part of an ongoing campaign organized by an organization of sustainability advocates, Ceres, and its BICEP coalition. Ceres uses a network of investors, companies, and public interest groups to accelerate and expand sustainable business practices and solutions to build a healthy global economy.
