There is a little file going around the Internet now that in two printed pages points out the wonders of God and the world that He made. It is designed to impress us with all the things that God did and arranged and how much of nature is “proof” of God. Nonsense. Take this from me – a former biologist, human anatomist and comparative anatomist.
Part of this flyer points to the fact that an elephant has different locomotion than other mammals or vertebrates. “God’s wisdom is seen in the making of an elephant. The four legs of this great beast all bend forward in the same direction. No other quadruped is so made.” So this flyer says, and note the “bend forward” part.
Nonsense. Pure nonsense and ignorance! The elephant is made just as are all other animals, including us. For a foreleg front leg), all animals have an equivalent of our shoulder joint, elbow joint and wrist joint. In the rear, they have the equivalent of our hip joint, knee joint and ankle joint.
The elephant has this – just like us – with a wrist joint that bends forward just as it does on other animals – only slightly higher up the leg. The ignorant and biologically impaired confuse this with a knee joint of the rear leg. You can’t confuse joints just to supposedly prove your god or God.
And if it were made so that equivalent joints all bent in the same direction, as the flyer says, why would this be more proof of God than of the natural selection of evolution?
You can have your own opinion, but you can’t have your own facts. This Godly “proof” through elephant anatomy is flat out wrong!
Then there is the “Godly proof” through vegetables. This same error-filled flyer states that the watermelon has an even number of stripes, the orange an even number of segments, an ear of corn an even number of rows and a stalk of wheat an even number of grains. So what?
Have I checked to see how many stripes there are in a watermelon, segments in an orange, rows in an ear of corn or grains in a stalk of wheat? Nope. I don’t intend to either. It makes no difference at all and is no proof of anything of God or man. It might have made a difference to Mendel (1822 – 1884) if he studied more than his peas and bees, but we won’t know now.
Does that mean that even numbers are good and odd numbers are bad? Does this go back to the superstition prior to the Babylonians that the number 13 is bad luck? (Check your copy of the Code of Hammurabi.) Does this prove anything other than the stupidity of those who think this way?
Then again, the Trinity of God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost is a total of three. Uh-oh. Is that bad? Three is an odd number! Is there trouble here? I guess it all depends upon the hocus-pocus you are believing today.
Certainly all this – or the parts of it that are true – are a wonder and a marvel. We can and should wonder at elephants and other vertebrates, the 200,000 species of butterflies, 20,000 species of ants, 20,000 species of bees, 350,000 (and counting) species of beetles, 100,000 species of arachnids including spiders, etc.
But these are wonders of natural selection, of millions of years of evolution, of the wonder of a species, genus, family or order to constantly evolve to suit their habitat and surroundings.
Let’s be thankful for nature, this world and its wonder and leave the hocus-pocus “proofs of God” to the theologians, maybe.
