The Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh (CFC) offers a rare opportunity for young gifted singers all over Western Pennsylvania to hone their musical and choral skills.
CFC’s mission is:
”Through professional-level choral education and performance, Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh provides opportunities for a diverse group of children to realize their innate artistic potential and share experiences that enrich their lives while benefiting their families and communities.
With budget cuts that are crippling public schools in subjects where children can grow and explore areas that will further develop them outside of the three R’s, CFC fills in the gap for those who are vocally talented.
Students pay tuition, but the majority of funds for this nonprofit organization comes from foundation grants.
Almost thirty years old, the chorus currently has 136 members. Ages range from 5 to 16 years old. There are actually three separate choruses based on their skill level:
- Troubador – for beginners
- Talisman – for those with more experience
- Bel Canto – for those with greater ability
The children are led by top-notch professional musicians and choral directors. Rehearsals are at Duquesne University.
The staff believes they empower the children by
“nurturing values and behaviors proven to build strong, confident and well-adjusted young adults, and enable them to work effectively with others and succeed in a dynamic, diverse world.
In an effort to embrace diversity of every kind, children are accepted into the chorus from all walks of life based solely on their choral ability and their personal character. No one is turned away for financial reasons.
Two children have gone on to achieve some commercial fame and success due to their involvement in CFC:
- C.J. Coyne sang the National Anthem at Heinz Field with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the last Batman movie.
- Alexandra Loutsion now sings with the Pittsburgh Opera.
Auditions for the chorus are May 13th. The final concert for this year is on May 11, at 4:00PM at North Hills Junior High School.
