Over the weekend, it was thought that the Kansas City Chiefs would draft a quarterback in the fourth round.
Even with Alex Smith in the fold for the future, there was speculation that new Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid would target a signal caller. Yet, the Chiefs did not draft a quarterback at all.
The thought was that Reid and the Chiefs would target Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley if they would have drafted a quarterback. This came to light after the Philadelphia Eagles, and Reid’s former employer, traded up in the fourth round to get Barkley.
Reid has said that the speculation that the Chiefs were going to draft Barkley in the fourth round was totally false.
“Well, we weren’t going there,” said Reid. “I actually was on the phone with Nick Saban from Alabama before that day ever started, so that’s just not the direction (we were going in). We had pinpointed (Alabama linebacker) Nico Johnson and that’s who we were going after.
“I know how rumors start and how people justify picks and all this other stuff, but I think if you look our roster, we’ve got Akeem Jordan at middle linebacker; that’s the only player that we have there…. That rumor started and I heard it, and I had to laugh at it. That wasn’t even in the picture.”
Apparently, the Eagles were lying to the media to make it look like the Chiefs wanted Barkley to tab a jab at Reid. However, this new Reid made it blunt that the Chiefs were not looking to draft Barkley – or any quarterback for that matter.
The Chiefs had other needs, and the Eagles made it seem like Reid had other intentions. Also, this scheme ensured that the Eagles would get their man in the fourth round, even with the quarterback circus that they have going on in Philadelphia.
Currently, the Eagles have Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Matt Barkley, Dennis Dixon, and G.J. Kinne on the quarterback depth chart. It appears like Kinne, a former Arena Football League quarterback, will likely only be on the roster until camp, when he is expected to be released.
Dixon, who played under Kelly, during their days together at Oregon in 2007 and 2008. Dixon was a former draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, yet hasn’t been on an NFL roster since 2011.
He was on the practice squad with the Baltimore Ravens last year, and is expected to be on the practice squad with the Eagles this year, unless the trade can find a taker for second-year quarterback Nick Foles.
So, Barkley could be the third quarterback, or possibly even the second quarterback, on the depth chart once the season begins.
