Is Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ bipolar disorder under control? That may be the case since the actress has “proactively” checked herself into a mental health facility, reported The Washington Post on April 29. “[Catherine] is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner,” said her publicist Sarah Fuller. In April 2011, Zeta-Jones sought treatment for Bipolar II disorder.
What is the mental illness? “Bipolar II is similar to bipolar I disorder, with moods cycling between high and low over time,” according to WebMD. “However, in bipolar II disorder, the ‘up’ moods never reach full-on mania . . . Most people with bipolar II disorder also suffer from episodes of depression. This is where the term ‘manic depression’ comes from.”
The 43-year-old Zeta-Jones, who’s been married to 68-year-old actor Michael Douglas since 2000, continues to lead a busy life as an actress. Her latest film is “Red 2” an American action-comedy film that is a sequel to the 2010 film “Red.” The film is due for release in July 2013.
