“Over the past two decades the pharmaceutical industry has moved very far from its original high purpose of discovering and producing useful new drugs. Now primarily a marketing machine to sell drugs of dubious benefit, this industry uses its wealth and power to co-opt every institution that might stand in its way, including the US Congress, the FDA, academic medical centers, and the medical profession itself.” -Marcia Angell, M.D., former editor of The New England Journal of Medicine
Twenty thousand people die of cancer every day. That’s eight million a year, and four million of those are Americans. The typical cancer patient spends fifty thousand dollars for their treatment. With one million diagnoses per year, it adds up to about 50 billion annually.
In the early 1900s, one out of every twenty people got cancer. In the 1940s, it was one out of sixteen. By the 1970s, it was one out of 10. Today, the number is one out of three, with over one million people diagnosed with a new cancer every year. Each of these people feed an immense medical apparatus that employes hundreds of thousands of individuals and generates millions and millions of dollars. It’s so large now that now the medical apparatus needs the patients to survive as much as the patients need the apparatus.
As of the making of the Forbidden Cures film, only three cancer therapies — surgery, chemo radiation & radiotherapy, had been approved- that’s over the past hundred years, and two of those three are themselves carcinogenic. This in spite of the fact that chemotherapy benefits only 5% of the patients it’s given to. In a world where mind-blowing advancements have been made in every other area of science, how can it be that no alternative approaches to cancer have been developed or approved?
To understand this, we have to look at the recent history of medicine. About a century ago, official (allopathic) medicine got the upper hand over empirical (naturopathic) medicine. New treatments emerged that were potentially very profitable. The American Medical Association (AMA) joined with strong financial forces to transform medicine into an industry. The fortunes of Carnegie, Rockefeller, and JP Morgan financed surgery, radiation and synthetic drugs, some of which were developed while looking for ways to profit from the waste byproducts of petroleum production. These were to become the economic foundations of the new medical economy.
In the documentary Cancer – The Forbidden Cures, G. Edward Griffin states that the takeover of the medical industry was accomplished by a takeover of the medical schools. In particular, John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie offered to put up money to the schools that would agree to cooperate with them. The donors requested to put their people on their board of directors to ensure that their money was being spent wisely. Almost overnight, most of the teaching universities received large grants from these sources and and put one to three people on their boards. Thus the medical schools were literally taken over by the financial interests who put up the money.
The schools were able to upgrade (new buildings, expensive equipment, top notch teachers), but they skewed their orientation in the direction of pharmaceutical drugs Thus the profit motive was disguised as philanthropy, or at least profit became an efficiency of it. Doctors from that point forward in history would graduate from medical school with little knowledge of nutrition, but they would know their drugs. All the medical schools in America were captured by the pharmaceutical interests in this fashion.
Surgery became viable with anaesthesia and infection control, and doctors began to advocate expensive, radical operations, which produced the need for a large lucrative hospital system. Radium fever swept medicine and the price of radium rose one thousand percent almost overnight. A drug industry grew out of the booming patent medicine business. Doctors changed education standards and licensing regulations to exclude the empirics (naturopaths). Soon only AMA approved doctors could legally practice medicine. In a mere twenty years, the AMA came to dominate medical practice. Organized medicine then launched a smear campaign to associate naturopaths with quacks.
Big Pharma companies such as Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson are among the largest corporations in the world. In 2004, their combined global sales were over ½ a trillion. In the United States, the core of these profits is from the sale of medications. Since most of these patented pharmaceuticals are prescribed by doctors, Big Pharma focuses most of its promotional activities on doctors, medical professionals, and even medical students. They start to receive gifts from the Industry sometimes years before graduation. As they get further along, the gifts escalate. Meanwhile, on TV, the public is deceived by ads of happy, healthy people enjoying life, while a scrolling list of adverse reactions and negative research swims subliminally past them, read aloud at unintelligible speed like a negligent afterthought.
Before 1980 most clinical research was funded by National Institutes of Health. In the 90’s most of that research got pulled from universities and was brought into private for-profit research organizations. This gave complete control over the research to the drug companies. Big Pharma could now design the studies, control the data (many of the authors of most important articles aren’t even allowed free access to their own data) and they control the publication.
So, Big Pharma took control of the teaching system. Then it gave AMA the power to exclude all other doctors from practicing. Then it took over the entire drug testing process while heavily influencing the medical publications that reviewed those drugs. Finally, it extended its control over the federal entity that is supposed to verify those drugs’ safety and efficacy. At the opposite are the sick citizens, and in the middle, the doctors that must cure them based on information that they can only get from the pharmaceutical industry, which can no longer be verified. So much for scientific method.
The drug industry is one of the most successful industries in the world. What they don’t want us to do is get better. If we get better, their market is gone.
Fear is pedaled shamelessly in medicine and human nutrition. The fearmongers prey on fear of disease, and the solutions they give us are drugs. Oiled by petrochemical dollars and a near worldwide monopoly in healthcare, the system works overtime to prevent the truth of nutrition, natural medicine and dietary supplements (among many, many other facts that would be extremely beneficial) to the public. Anything that comes from nature can’t be patented, and the Food and Drug Administration says that it’s illegal to use unless it’s been tested for efficacy or safety. Nothing from nature will ever be proven safe or effective by the FDA, because nobody will spend the money to fund the tests. Don’t look at medical marijuana – cannabanoids have already been patented for use by the U.S. Government. The FDA receives disguised kickbacks from Big Pharma for its profits. If cannabis is legalized, you can bet that it will be patented in pharmaceutical form for Big Pharma and government profits, and that growing it oneself will remain illegal. Where’s the profit in that?
Everywhere we look, the absurdity of life stares back at us. Corporations are creating modified organisms, patenting the seeds, and suing small farmers with second-generation crops that are ‘unlicensed’. Private companies are buying up finite water supplies. Five-year-olds are getting raped. People are working themselves to death at jobs that don’t matter. Senseless violence erupts. Perpetual war wages. False flag events destroy lives. Things are wrong, and they are not what they seem. It’s time to wake up, step out of the manipulation, and put all the pieces of the puzzle together.
There is a growing body of research and evidence to support all the statements made in this article, and there are myriad directions to follow up from here that go far beyond the scope on hospitals. I will leave it to you to research the connections and influence of Big Pharma over the medical system and the FDA, and the relationship between petrochemical dollars and the state of affairs in Denmark. Listed below are a few resources to follow up on if you are interested.
Pharmaceuticals save lives and improve lives – no question about it. But natural remedies that are inexpensive also have great value, and the system is rigged against them. The point of this article is not to be anti-pharma, or anti-western medicine. It is to highlight the imbalance and absurdity of the situation, to show how we got to this point, and to catalyze change.
And of course, enlightenment exists everywhere, in every corner of the professional world as well. Awakened individuals battle with ignorance like antibodies, within all organizations. Integral individuals are working in every sector trying to bring illumination, reform and healing. But drastic change is needed, and without wider pressure from an informed public, change comes too slowly to help those of who need it now.
In any case, your best bet is learn everything you can about nutrition and select your food and meals consciously and carefully.
