One of the most overlooked gems at Bonnaroo is the Cinema Tent. With so much music on offer, most fans only hit the Cinema Tent if they need a quick dose of darkness and air conditioning. In the last few years, Bonnaroo has tried to change that with an ever increasing set of Q&A sessions, musical accompaniment, and interactive offerings in the Cinema Tent. Bonnaroo 2013 continues this trend as today, April 30, they announced a stellar slate of cinematic offerings.
This year’s lineup includes the usual set of movies, the NBA Finals, and Rock the Earth Green Screens documentaries, along with many special features. Here are some of the highlights:
Every year, Bonnaroo takes you inside the movies with Q&A sessions with creators, actors, or featured artists. Bonnaroo 2013 has one of the biggest sets of Q&A sessions ever. From comedy film “The Way, Way Back”, directors Jim Rash and Nat Faxon will be on hand. Comedian Mike Birbiglia, in addition to his shows in the Bonnaroo Comedy Tent, will also host a Q&A session before screening his new movie “Sleepwalk with Me.” Sundance 2013 sensation “Hell Baby” will be screened and directors Robert Ben Grant and Thomas Lennon will be on hand for questions. There will be a sneak peek at AMC’s new series “Low Winter Sun” with a Q&A featuring actors Mark Strong and Lennie James.
Music related documentaries have always been a part of the Bonnaroo Cinema Tent and Bonnaroo 2013 keeps that tradition going. They are also continuing the recent tradition of live soundtracking of cinema tent movies. Bonnaroo performers The Polyphonic Spree will perform live renditions of the music from midnight movie classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” DJ Thomas Golubic, music supervisor for “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” will do a live re-score of the Mel Gibson classic “The Road Warrior.” Bonnaroo performers Matt & Kim will host “How to Make a Fun Music Video.” Matt Berninger from The National will introduce “Mistaken For Strangers (The National Documentary)”.
A number of comedians at Bonnaroo end up doing special features in the Cinema Tent as well. This year, Michael Winslow, the Man of 1000 Sound Effects best known for the “Police Academy” films, will perform. Lieutenant Jim Dangle and Deputy Travis Junior from “Reno 911” will deliver a “Bonnaroo Drug Safety Seminar.” Lance Crouthers will reprise his starring role in “Pootie Tang” to introduce the film in character. Comic Chris Gethard will present “Reasons I’m Both Proud and Ashamed to be on Public Access.”
Some of the most well received Cinema Tent offerings are the interactive features. This year, the Bonnaroo Cinema Tent will feature three big interactive events. In honor of Bonnaroo performer R. Kelly’s “hip-hopera” “Trapped in the Closet”, there will be a “Trapped in the Closet Sing-Along.” If you can get your big hair to hold up in the Bonnaroo heat, the “Totally ’80s Sing-Along” might be for you. Or if you prefer to show off your moves, there’s the “Footloose Dance-Along Party.”
These are just a few of the Bonnaroo Cinema Tent features for 2013. You can find a larger list here and can see the full Cinema Tent lineup when the Bonnaroo schedule is released later this week.
