Beltane is today! Not all groups, covens, groves, and other such organizations are celebrating today since its mid week but you can be sure that many celebrated last weekend and will celebrate this weekend. Don’t be a twice a year Pagan who only celebrates their beliefs on the two major holidays (Beltane and Samhain). You can celebrate today and with the organization (if you’re a member of one) that you normally practice with and all year around.
Beltane is a celebration of life and fertility of the land, plants, trees, animals and so on. This is the time f the year when we welcome in the season, fertility and the abundance of life. Depending on your Pagan path the festivities may start on the evening before May 1st at sun down or they may start at sun rise on May 1st. Each tradition has its own set of rites, ceremonies and other such festivities but most keep things very fun and casual.
It is fairly common in most paths that children and those who are unmarried wear white clothing as a symbol of their youth, innocence and availability for marriage or courting in those that are of age. Most paths will also hold a short rite that will not include magical workings as it’s not suggested to do such workings on holidays. Pagan holidays are usually restricted to celebration rather than magical workings but once in a while if there is a desperate need it can be done. Its also very common that many groups will have barbeques, out door games and activities and other similar festivities.
