The producers of Baltimore Fashion Week added to its annual production schedule a fashion event devoted to the petite consumer, and had the kick off event Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. EST at the Women’s Club of Catonsville, located at 10 St. Timothy’s Lane, Catonsville, Maryland. The Women’s Club of Catonsville was the host venue for this one of a kind event.
UNDER’s fashion concentration is toward the petite consumer. Models for this event were 5 feet 7 inches or shorter. Utilizing the skillsets of petite models was the only way to accurately portray the petite demographic.
Petite consumers within the fashion industry have spent up to $10 billion dollars over the past several years. The petite female represents 70% of the current United States population. UNDER included in its production 38 models that represented part of that 70%.
“Models for years shorter than the required runway height of 5 feet 9 inches, have either registered or attended our castings, but were too short. UNDER was created to give petite models the opportunity to represent that community,” stated Nixon.
You would think models presented with such a large challenge and being a standout would be shy. Humph . . heck naw shy was far from the correct description. Maybe the models were shy during the auditions and the pre-rehearsal the day of the show, but once the lights came on and the DJ (David “DJ Big Dave” Ortiz – firstname.lastname@example.org) dropped the beat the models transformed into a different type of fashionable being. Being the producer of this event, I received goose bumps, because I remember when they auditioned, and how nervous they were during the designer selection. But WOW they really transformed into a different state of fashion representation.
Goodwill Industries, Inc. was the key caveat for this event with the introduction of “Styling Under $20.” To bring these stylings to the runway stylings teams were approached and presented with the challenge to create a look for each model within a price point of $20. Goodwill Industries, Inc. was represented on the runway with 2 individual collections individually presented by Top Kitty Boutique and Exceptional Geeks.
UNDER provided a showcasing platform for 5 designers who saturated the runway with high fashion, accessories, spring posh presented by Goodwill, outside of the box business casual presented by Goodwill, comfort and resort wear. The colors were fabulous and the models were fabulous-ER, if that is such a word. Models were from age 13 and up.

The ambiance was set the décor talents of Events of Sophistication, Diane Freeland, Owner (www.eventsofsophistication.com). The up lighting and focal point presentation was the look and feel of true elegance.
Hair and make-up services were provided by Untangled Paul Mitchell Focused Salon located in Baltimore. The creative direction was provided by Nikole Butler, Owner, along with Melissa Chambers, Manager. From the hair to the lightly glossed lips – transformation was the key factor on every model.
Surprisingly for this inaugural event UNDER was STANDING ROOM ONLY. This was truly something desired by the guests of this event. The production team is working on the location for next year’s event and ticket prices will remain the same for the 2014 production of UNDER – The Petite Fashion Event.
