Fifteen years ago artist Michael Turner launched the comic series “Fathom.” His stunning artwork led this comic to becoming one of the best-selling books of 1998. Ten years ago, Turner founded Aspen Comics. The comic company made its mark in the comic book industry with dazzling art and innovative storytelling. The publisher takes its name from the lead of the “Fathom” series, Aspen Matthews.
Now Aspen is celebrating both the 15th anniversary of “Fathom” and the tenth anniversary of Aspen Comics by launching an all-new “Fathom” series. The new series by writer David Wohl, artist Alex Konat, and colorist Beth Sotelo will be the sixth comic in Aspen’s “10 for 10” initiative. In a press release dated April 9, 2013, Aspen discussed the new series.
Michael Turner’s best-selling series has reached its milestone 15-year anniversary! However, Aspen Matthews’ adventure under the surface has no plans of slowing down! Following the devastating events of The Elite Saga, Aspen Matthews finds herself at a decisive crossroads in her life—with the memories of her past no longer weighing her down, she is finally able to set about building a new life in San Diego once more. But, being the daughter of two worlds is no easy feat—and Aspen will quickly discover the winds of change oftentimes lead directly into the perils of fate!
The events of the new “Fathom” series will follow the June storyline from Fathom: The Elite Saga a five issue weekly series released in June 2013. Even with this highly-anticipated event preceding it, Aspen promises the all-new “Fathom” will take the characters in a completely new direction. The new series debuts July 24th and is the perfect place to start reading the adventures of Aspen Matthews.
The series combines action, adventure, science fiction into a world beneath the ocean’s surface. Aspen Matthews grew up tied to the ocean, adopted at a young age she always felt a connection to the water. She competed for gold as a swimmer in the Olympics and then turned her attentions to Marine Biology earning several advanced degrees. Aspen found that she had a remarkable connection to the water and when that connection was broken she was the only thing powerful enough to stop a war between the humans on the surface and an underwater race known as the Blue.
“From the first time I ever heard Michael Turner talk about “Fathom,” I knew he was onto something very special and very cool. At that point, we were working on “Witchblade” together, and even then, I hoped that someday I’d have the opportunity to write it. And now, during the 10th Anniversary of Aspen Comics, I’ve gotten my chance, and I couldn’t be more elated!” Wohl said in the press release.

The issue will feature a standard cover by Konat and those who have their retailer reserve them a copy will receive a copy of “Fathom” #1 Reserved Edition with exclusive cover by Konat.
