The hit game Anomaly Warzone Earth has spawned a sequel with the well-earned success from the mobile versions like AW: Korea and the console releases of AWE. Anomaly 2 is a 100% upgrade and direct sequel to Warzone Earth and it looks fantastic. Not too long ago I got to play the single player beta that was supplied to members of the press.
What I got was a totally redesigned tower defense game that brings something new to the table in a unique original fashion. As a self-proclaimed aficionado of tower defense games I was stoked to play the sequel. The execution and originality that the previous Anomaly games were something to see and everyone has to play them at least once.
Offering an engaging mysterious story of survival and rebellion, the humans must strike back against the alien race that has how taken over the planet. Recently, I was supplied with a preview build of the multiplayer. Yes, a tower defense game that allows you to play as the alien towers as well as the attacking force.I was skeptical. I did not know what to expect. Balance was the big issue for me and the pacing was something else. I can safely say my worries were put to rest and I am very surprised with the multiplayer so far in Anomaly 2.
One person plays as the towers and the other as the attacking force. The goal is to real 1000 points first. Now the towers just have to destroy the attacking forces, while the attacking force has to destroy towers and generators. Generators are how the towers operate and they give the most points. The multiplayer runs exactly like the single player. Except when you activate abilities on your suit like repair, the game doesn’t pause.
You will have to use the tactical view to plot your course and be strategic with how you send out your units. Of course utilizing the new morph mechanic with your units is also a factor. When you collect more and more points you will be able to spend them on upgrades both on your units and in your tech tree. The tech tree allows better repairs, longer EMP durations, health and damage buffs etc. These also cost currency you gain from destroying towers and generators.
The multiplayer is pretty balanced and very skill based. Your ability to predict where your opponent will send their units or deploy their towers will come in handy. You will also have a skill rating based on how many games you win etc so you will fight against your own skill level to ease you into the game. The visuals are great as always and the level design offers simplicity and loads of strategic opportunity. It is rare I find multiplayer a joy to play in a single player driven game. Preorders for Anomaly 2 are up on Steam now. Buy it now; get a free copy when it comes out. Who doesn’t love that deal? This is a game you do not want to pass up on.
