Have you ever been running on a treadmill at the gym and been forced to watch a program you would normally not watch? I recently had the displeasure of viewing CNN during my time at the gym and quickly recalled reasons for a continued prohibition. It does not matter which network you watch however, because they all have a bias and do not give you the whole truth. Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN all have a horse in the race although some people believe CNN is fairly neutral. Let us have a look.
The first story Wolf Blitzer covered during my viewing time was about Republican congressman Don Young from Alaska calling Mexican migrant workers wetbacks. This is generally understood to be a slanderous remark and the congressman should be called out on it. CNN did a fine job of that. What they did not do was talk about the Democrat congressman from Alabama who went on a racial tirade against one of his constituents who was asking him to stop gun control legislation. This is not just a tit for tat situation, it is one that should be addressed. Both stories are closely related, happened within a very short time frame of each other and should have been compared to each other. An honest media outlet would have done that.
The next story that CNN covered was about Jim Carrey and his parody video about those opposed to gun control. The headline was about Fox News and it’s over reaction to the video. A Democrat as well as a Republican strategist came on to discuss. The Republican strategist was agreeing with some of the gun control measures, showing the audience that this is how a good Republican or conservative behaves. The group demeaned Fox News and it’s audience as being too sensitive and claimed that Jim Carrey was just making a funny video. What was never brought up was the vitriolic and crass tweets that Jim Carrey had sent out about those against gun control. In that context it would be easy to see that Jim Carrey was not just making a funny parody but was making disparaging comments about people he does not agree with. An honest media would have shown that context.
The last story that I saw on CNN was unbiased and truthful. It was very refreshing to see, at least for the 15 to 20 seconds that it was covered. President Obama was in Miami giving a speech about American infrastructure and touting it’s success when an American flag blew away from a crane. Ironically, where the flag has been was the logo for the Chinese company that built the crane. The president, or most certainly his handlers, intentionally had the flag placed over this logo. This story got less than half a minute of coverage on CNN. They quickly followed this up with a much longer piece about Chief Justice Roberts being a victim of identity theft. Even when CNN is honest it can only be honest in a very short time frame and not bring in political pundits to discuss that story.
This is not a hit piece aimed directly at CNN. This is reflection on all of the major news sources. These are companies and they are interested in making money, not necessarily being honest. There is nothing wrong with that if you don’t claim to be fair, unbiased, and actual journalists. People should not depend on just source for the information. Hearing just one side of the story or just one opinion is never a good idea. It is recommended individuals get second opinions on multiple things such as car troubles and medical diagnosis, we should take the same precautions with our information.
