A New Hampshire nonprofit corporation is working across political differences to restore faith in the American system of government. Americans United to Rebuild Democracy, a 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit Corporation, headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, exists to work with national leaders in both parties to put an end to the practices that have so many Americans believing their political system is broken. Given the very low confidence attributed to the national government, this organization appears to have a mission that could appeal to a lot of Americans.
Americans United to Rebuild Democracy has three main goals.
- Establish term limits for Congress.
- End gerrymandering.
- Create a clean elections process.
Each of the goals enjoys broad support among the population at large, but the goals run into roadblocks when the specifics are debated among the political class in Washington. For this reason, the organization is seeking alliances with influential leaders that have respect on both sides of the aisle in Washington and can get things done on a bi-partisan basis.
The President of Americans United to Rebuild Democracy, Stephen Erickson, believes that if these three goals could be achieved, the country would be well on its way to restoring faith in its democratic system. As it stands today, the political system is one in which careerists and opportunists use the system to advance their own careers by cow-towing to the narrow interests of those that have the most money to influence the system. Most political leaders stay too long in Washington and they become corrupted by a system that rewards people who know how to play the game. Unfortunately, many national leaders are bought and paid for in what has been characterized as a system of organized bribery. Longevity leads to corruption.
American Founder, James Madison, is the philosophical mentor for Erickson. Madison called these special interests, factions. Madison knew that a democratic system could not survive if the factions took over the government because the broad interests would be subsumed by those that were receiving disproportionate benefits from the political class. Erickson and his colleagues believe the factions are now in control of the process and dramatic action is needed to reverse course. Most Americans agree.
In order to better represent what the organization is trying to do, Americans United to Rebuild Democracy is creating a new brand. Soon the organization will be called, The Clean Government Alliance, which is a common sense brand that illustrates what the organization is trying to accomplish. Look for that change to occur soon.
