Tonight’s American Idol results show started out with a bizarre clip of Jimmy Iovine not being able to hear Janelle during her rehearsal time in the studio – he told the man working with him that he fired 110 assistants when he was making records because he couldn’t hear the vocalist on the other side of the glass. Suddenly, Jimmy could hear Janelle. With that, the judges and Ryan were announced and walked out on stage, before Ryan welcomed the top nine contestants as well. He sent them to the couches for the recap of last night’s show, along with Jimmy’s critique of the performances.
Jimmy was frustrated that the judges were coddling the contestants. He thought Kree was great and deserved applause. Jimmy really enjoyed Burnell’s tone, even though he was surprised he didn’t know Beatles’ music. He definitely thought Lazaro’s performance was the worst last night. Jimmy cleared things up and explained that Amber chose her song on her own and nailed it. He said Candice’s performance was the best of the night and that she is a natural. Jimmy didn’t think Paul gave the worst performance of the night, but he did think he would be in the bottom three. He thought Angie was too dramatic, but if she can fix that, she can be the next American Idol. Jimmy said Devin was the middle of the pack and needs to work on delivery and consistency. He also thought Janelle picked the perfect song and is the dark horse of the competition.
Ryan got to the results and asked Amber to stand up. They played video of her during rehearsal trying to get down the staircase with all the smoke, which proved to be quite a difficult task. Ryan then told Amber she would have to hold on and wait to hear her results.
After the commercial break, the guys sang “Got to Get You Into My Life.” As they returned to the couches, Ryan asked Paul to stay behind. He presented him with a plaque that said last Saturday was declared Paul Jolley Day back in his hometown. Ryan then revealed that the bad news was Paul was in the bottom three this week.
Casey Abrams (and his bass) returned to the Idol stage and sang “I Saw Her Standing There.” After he performed, Casey told Ryan he is writing new songs every day.
The ladies slowed things down and sang “Here, There, and Everywhere.” Ryan invited them back to the couches and asked Devin to stand. They talked about his performance briefly before Ryan revealed he was also in the bottom three. Ryan asked Lazaro to stand next, and Lazaro agreed with the judges’ comments from the night before. He added that he needs to pick a song he is comfortable with and stick with it. Ryan then told Lazaro he was safe.
Jessica Sanchez, last season’s runner-up, returned to the stage for a performance with Neyo. Before she sang “Tonight,” they rolled footage of the last year showing how her life has changed. (She has been modeling, performing, and will be making an appearance on Glee).
Getting back to the results, Ryan announced that the next person would be moving forward, and they flashed Kree’s picture on the big screen. Also safe was Candice, who joined Lazaro and Kree on the couch. The next person safe was Angie, followed by Janelle and Burnell, leaving Amber as the last person in the bottom three. Randy was shocked to see Amber in the bottom three.
After the final commercial break, Nicki also agreed that she couldn’t believe Amber was in the bottom three and reminded her that something had seemed off last night. Without revealing the bottom two, Ryan announced it was Paul Jolley who had to sing for the judges’ save tonight. The others cleared the stage, and Paul sang Heart’s “Alone.” Once he finished, Ryan went to Randy, who said they would not be using the save. Paul was all right with it, since he now has his own day, and they played footage of his time on the show.
