Ahhh, Amelia. The long, beautiful beaches of a barrier island. A rich and colorful history. And a true get-away-from-it-all feeling that goes all the way down to your toes buried in white sand. One of northeast Florida’s most popular destinations, this little treasure island is filled with gems just waiting to be discovered. Only 30 miles from Jacksonville, Amelia Island is immediately south of Cumberland Island, Georgia, but once you’re there, you’ll feel a world away.
Here’s a bit of trivia: Amelia Island’s nickname is “the Island of Eight Flags,” being the only U.S. location to be under the rule of eight different flags. It was named for the daughter of King George II of England (one of those eight flags).
In addition to abundant wildlife, sanctuaries, luxurious resorts, charming inns, championship golf courses, world-class spas, fine dining, boat charters, private guided nature tours, historic spots, and unforgettable scenery, Amelia Island is also home to Fernandina Beach (pop. 11,487), the only town on the island. It’s a lovely glimpse of small-town days gone by, with an Old Town Historic District, trolley rides, the Palace Saloon, antique shops, and beautifully preserved Victorian architecture. Check out the Amelia Island Museum of History with its variety of walking tours and docent-led tours through 4,000 years of natural and human history.
