Educated, intelligent people believe spirits exist, Debra is one of them. In October 2008 Debra would experience the worst day of her life, her mother would pass away after a brief illness. Debra’s brother called to say mom had taken a turn for the worse, it was time to get to the hospital. Debra’s mother was not concious when she arrived although Debra believed her mother knew her family was present. Hour after hour the family sat in silence, staring, listening for her voice but nothing happened. Her breathing was heavy and erratic. Sadness filled the air as everyone knew they would never see their beloved mother again. It was close to 6am the next morning when Debra’s mother’s breathing changed from heavy and erratic to quick and soft. The family stood around her bed and said a final prayer.
Debra’s sister sat across from Debra at the head of the bed. Debra’s mother’s face was turned towards her, the rest of the family stood in silence. Debra watched her mother carefully as she held her hand tightly not wanting to say her final goodbyes. The tears flowed down her face, her sadness quickly turned to fright when she noticed what she thought was another persons face directly on top of her mother’s. Chris was standing directly behind Debra’s chair, her brother a foot away from Chris. Debra turned to them and said ‘I think I’m halucinating’! Debra turned back and the face had vanished. A moment later her mother took her last breath.
Debra could not get the image out of her head. The long drive home was met with more silence, thoughts and memories filled Debra’s head. Finally she couldn’t hold it in any more she had to ask Chris if he saw anything unusual. He didn’t. Debra told Chris about what she had seen, she knew she didn’t imagine it. Neither one could find an explanation for this event. Debra felt drained, her mother’s death had devastated her.
After a restless night Debra called her sister to see if she noticed anything unusual, the image she saw continued to haunt her. Debra began describing the other face, she was stunned to hear her sister had seen the exact image. Debra realized she had not been halucinating, now she needed to find closure to this event. Debra was desperate to erase this image from her mind. Thoughts of her mother filled her head, why did this spirit come through a few moments before her mother passed?
It was several weeks later when Debra finally received a reasonable answer to her question. Gordon was a friend of Debra’s brother, he had written several books on the paranormal he offered an explanation for this event. Gordon explained that spirits are drawn to other spirits. Gordon also added it wasn’t a ‘bad thing’, it was just a visit from the other side, another person that had lived and died, possibly the last person to die in that same hospital bed. This sort of made sense to Debra, it was easier for her to understand. The guilt she felt from this unknown spirit interupting her focus on her mother eventually passed.
Debra often visits small country churches, she finds solace in the spiritualness that surrounds them. The photo published was from a century old church located just north of Orangeville, Ontario. The spirits seen in this photo may be drawn to the church they attended when they lived among us.
Debra believes her mother’s spirit is within her, surrounding her and will never leave. Until they meet again…
In loving memory. Always in our hearts.
