What can audiences expect when they come to one of your shows?
Our audiences can expect to see a great show of good music, high energy, and lots of fun!
What is the most challenging part of the recording process?
Recording was actually really fun and quite easy. There were some long overdubs which aren’t too fun but for the most part it was really awesome to hear our songs come together. For Paige, laying down the vocal tracks was the most challenging. If there’s just something a little off, you have to keep doing it over and over… But, we had lots of help from the great Ryan Hewitt, so it all worked out okay in the end!
What did you learn about yourself as musicians while writing the songs for the Hey You E.P.?
The most important thing we learned was to be yourself, in everything you do, especially while writing songs. We realized that to make good music, it has to be personal to you. You have to connect with what you’re writing about, otherwise people can’t connect to it, either.
How did the title Hey You originate?
The title Hey You originated after the song we wrote called Hey You. Since we are a high energy band, we wanted our EP to be named after our most high energy song, with an easy-to-remember and impactful name and that was Hey You. Hey You is the title of the first track. This song was written about bullies, show-offs, and just rude people. Each verse describes a different situation but they all have the same message.
Which of the songs on Hey You was the most difficult to write?
Believe in Me was by far the most difficult to write, especially for Paige. The other songs are more high energy in your face type of music, but Believe in Me brought out her vulnerability, and that’s really hard to just put out there. Because Paige is in a band of all boys, she likes to be strong a lot of the time.
“I found that in writing the lyrics to Believe in Me, I had to just let it all out. The minute I let it go, I felt better. Especially now, knowing how many other people out there feel the same way that I did, and understand where I was coming from.”-Paige
Did any songs not make it on the E.P. that you thought would?
There was one song that we recorded and thought it might make it called Silhouette. Although we didn’t get this one on the EP, we believe that our EP has four really solid songs on it, and we were happy we got those done and nailed. At the time we didn’t really have a lot more than what we recorded, but now we’ve got a ton of new and awesome stuff coming your way so stick around!
Who are three musicians/groups that have inspired/influenced you?
Well, people who influence Paige and her singing would be Haley Williams, Stevie Nicks, Gwen Stafani, Flyleaf, and Garbage. People who influence us as a band would probably be Blink182, Paramore, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fall Out Boy, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana.
What does being brave mean to you?
Brave to us means courage — the courage to speak out and not be afraid of what people think of you in the end. The courage to follow your dream and know in your heart this is what you’re supposed to be doing, and the courage to influence others to do the same.
What’s next for Slater in 2013?
Lots of live performances! Last weekend we played a sold out show at the Troubadour. Upcoming is the Roxy on May 4th, as well as multiple Warped Tour 2013 dates but locals can catch us at the Pomona show on June 21st.
