In a horrific turn of events Saturday, an 18-year-old man named Jean Soriano who is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol ran into the back of a Chevy Astro van traveling on I-15 near Mesquite, Nevada. The Astro was carrying seven members of the same family and five members of the family were thrown from the van in the accident and killed at around 3 a.m.
The crash occurred when Soriano hit the back end of the Astro with his Dodge Durango, causing the Astro to overturn. There is no word if the five who were ejected had seat belts on or not. A mother, 40-years-old, and her 15-year-old son survived along with Soriano and a 23-year-old passenger of the Durango.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Loy Hixson of the Nevada Highway Patrol said that authorities, “’had every reason to believe [Soriano] was under the influence while operating the vehicle’ and that his blood was being tested. Beer bottles were found in his vehicle. Hixson said.”
Our hearts and prayers go out to the surviving victims who are in critical condition and are left to mourn the loss of a teenage daughter, her father, aunt and two uncles.
